I'm Getting Paid to Blog

Spent part of this morning setting up the basic framework of the brand-new University of Manitoba Sciences and Technology Library blog (obviously, there's no content yet). All the previous MoveableType knowledge and experience I gained from working on as I live the questions is being put to excellent use.

This is so cool... Blogging is now part of my job!

I'm actually getting paid to blog!!!   Woohoo!

Static Web Page Maintenance via MT

Geeking out heavily today :-)

Following up on a link from this original post, I decided to try out the method described by Brad Choate to be able to create and maintain static (i.e. non-blog) Web pages using MoveableType. Works like a charm!

The first page that I have moved over to this system is my Internet links page, Ryan's Internet Treasure Map. This means that I can now update it from anywhere I have an Internet connection; I don't need to use DreamWeaver to maintain it anymore.

Library Newsblog

I think it would be a great idea to set up a Newsblog for my library, the Sciences and Technology Library at the University of Manitoba....sort of a more up-to-date version of our newsletter which we send out to faculty. I'll have to talk to Jonathan about getting space on the library server. He's already using MoveableType for an existing project, SFX implementation here in the Libraries (I'd give you the blog URL but it's staff-only).

Security

Many of the bloggers whose sites I follow are talking about the recent spate of spam commenting on their weblogs. So I decided to upgrade MoveableType to version 2.661 and to install MT-Blacklist, and set up all the security features.

Geeking Out

I am really geeking out today: spent some time learning a bit more about Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and used that knowledge to tweak my calendar headings a bit. Spent some time browsing through the MoveableType support forums. Then went over to blogrolling.com and set up my first blogroll. Now I'm using the Blogroll It! feature as I browse through some "top 100 blogs" Web sites (like this one) to add some favourite blogs to my blogroll.

I'm going to keep a seprate, built-by-hand link list for any MoveableType, HTML, and CSS links relating directly to maintaining and updating this site, but everything else will go into the blogroll from now on.
